How to Prepare for TNPSC Group 1 Exam 2026 – Complete Strategy for Tamil Nadu Aspirants
TNPSC Group 1 is the most prestigious state government examination in Tamil Nadu, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission for positions like Deputy Collector, DSP, Assistant Director and other Group A services. If you are planning to crack TNPSC Group 1 in 2026, here is a complete preparation strategy.
Exam Pattern – Preliminary
Preliminary exam has 200 questions for 300 marks with 2 hours duration. Sections: General Studies (150 questions – 225 marks) and Aptitude & Mental Ability (50 questions – 75 marks). The preliminary is a screening test and marks are not counted for final merit.
Exam Pattern – Main Examination
Paper I: General Studies (300 marks), Paper II: General Studies (300 marks), Paper III: Tamil Language Eligibility Test (100 marks – qualifying only), Interview: 60 marks. Total: 960 marks.
Subject-wise Preparation Tips
Tamil Nadu History & Culture: Focus on Sangam Age, Pallava, Chola, Pandya dynasties. Tamil Nadu's contribution to freedom movement. Study Samacheer Kalvi textbooks from Class 6–10.
Indian History: Mughal period, British India, Freedom struggle, Post-independence India. NCERT Class 6–12 are essential.
Geography: Tamil Nadu geography (districts, rivers, reservoirs, wildlife sanctuaries), Indian geography, World geography basics.
Polity: Indian Constitution, Fundamental Rights & Duties, Directive Principles, Parliament, State Legislature, Judiciary, Local Self Government (73rd and 74th Amendment).
