Tamil Nadu Announces 'Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram' Gold Ring Scheme for Newborns

🗓  ·  Schemes & Welfare Programs

What Happened?

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay confirmed on 30 August 2026 the scheduled launch of the 'Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam' (Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme), under which every baby born in a government hospital in the state will receive a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring. The scheme is to be formally launched on 15 September 2026, the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.

Key Highlights

  • The scheme applies to permanent residents of Tamil Nadu delivering in government health institutions, benefiting an estimated 4,41,667 births annually.
  • Total annual outlay is estimated at Rs 755.83 crore.
  • The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) will procure and distribute the rings.
  • The benefit applies retrospectively to babies born in government hospitals from 22 June 2026 (CM Vijay's birthday).
  • The scheme was first announced by Vijay during the 2026 Assembly election campaign.

Tamil Nadu Relevance

The scheme draws on the Tamil cultural tradition of 'Thaimaman Seer', where a maternal uncle gifts gold to a newborn. It follows earlier Tamil Nadu maternity welfare schemes such as the Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme.
