World Elephant Day 2026: India's Wild Elephant Population Estimated at 22,446
What Happened?
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change observed World Elephant Day 2026 on 12 August 2026, with national celebrations and the Gaj Gaurav Awards 2026 held at Visakhapatnam on 13 August. As per the Synchronous All India Population Estimation of Elephants (SAIEE) 2021-25, India's first DNA-based synchronised elephant census, the country's wild elephant population is estimated at 22,446.
Key Highlights
- India is home to nearly 60% of the world's wild Asian elephant population
- India has 33 notified Elephant Reserves across 14 States and 150 scientifically validated elephant corridors
- The SAIEE 2021-25 census used DNA fingerprinting of dung samples along with block counts and line-transect surveys
Why It Matters
Elephant conservation, human-elephant conflict mitigation, and Project Elephant are important TNPSC Environment topics, especially given Tamil Nadu's own elephant corridors and human-elephant conflict challenges in the Western Ghats.
