Introduction
The human body is a highly organised living system in which different organs and organ systems work together to maintain life. An organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform one or more important functions.
Among the major systems of the human body, the digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system and nervous system are especially important for understanding basic human physiology and are frequently useful for TNPSC General Science preparation.
These systems are closely interconnected. The digestive system obtains nutrients from food, the respiratory system supplies oxygen and removes carbon dioxide, the circulatory system transports nutrients and gases throughout the body, and the nervous system coordinates and controls body activities.
TNPSC Important: Do not study these four systems as completely separate topics. Questions can test the relationship between them, especially the transport of oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes.

The organisation of the human body can be understood in the following order:
- Cell: The basic structural and functional unit of life.

Homeostasis
Homeostasis refers to the maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment in the body despite changes in the external environment.
The nervous system and several other regulatory mechanisms help coordinate body functions, while systems such as the circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems provide the materials required for maintaining normal cellular activity.
1. Digestive System
Definition
The digestive system is the group of organs involved in the ingestion, digestion, absorption and elimination of food.
Food contains complex substances such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Many of these substances must be broken down into simpler forms before they can be absorbed and used by the body.

Alimentary Canal
The alimentary canal is a continuous muscular tube extending from the mouth to the anus.

Digestion begins in the mouth.

Oesophagus

Food is pushed through the oesophagus by rhythmic muscular contractions called peristalsis.
Stomach
The stomach is a muscular, sac-like organ located between the oesophagus and small intestine.

Gastric juice contains substances including hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes.

Small Intestine
The small intestine is the principal site for completion of digestion and absorption of digested nutrients.
It receives digestive secretions from the pancreas and bile from the liver through the associated ducts.
Villi
The inner surface of the small intestine contains numerous finger-like projections called villi.
Villi increase the surface area available for absorption.

Liver
The liver is the largest internal gland of the human body and performs several important functions.
In digestion, its most important role is the production of bile.
Bile helps in the digestion of fats by emulsifying fats, meaning it breaks large fat globules into smaller droplets, increasing the surface area available for enzyme action.
Bile is stored and concentrated in the gallbladder before being released into the small intestine.
Pancreas
The pancreas is an important digestive gland. It releases pancreatic juice containing enzymes that help digest carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
The pancreas also has an endocrine function and produces hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which help regulate blood glucose levels.
Large Intestine
The large intestine follows the small intestine.

- Absorption of water and some electrolytes
- Formation of faeces
- Storage and movement of faecal matter towards the rectum
Rectum and Anus
The rectum temporarily stores faeces. The anus is the terminal opening through which faeces are expelled from the body.

Definition
The circulatory system is responsible for transporting blood and the substances carried by blood throughout the body.
It consists mainly of the heart, blood and blood vessels.

Heart

Right Side of the Heart
The right side receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it towards the lungs for oxygenation.
Left Side of the Heart
The left side receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body.

Capillaries
Capillaries are very small blood vessels that connect the arterial and venous sides of circulation.
Their thin walls facilitate the exchange of gases, nutrients and wastes between blood and tissues.
Blood
Blood is a specialised connective tissue consisting of plasma and formed elements such as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
Plasma
Plasma is the liquid component of blood. It transports nutrients, hormones, proteins, gases and waste products.
Red Blood Cells
Red blood cells (RBCs) contain haemoglobin and are primarily responsible for transporting oxygen.
White Blood Cells
White blood cells (WBCs) are involved in defence against infections and foreign substances.
Platelets
Platelets play an important role in blood clotting and help prevent excessive blood loss after injury.
Double Circulation
In humans, blood passes through the heart twice during one complete circulation. This is called double circulation.
It has two major components:

Pulse is the rhythmic expansion of an artery caused by the pumping action of the heart.

3. Respiratory System
Definition
The respiratory system is the system responsible for taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide through the process of gas exchange.

Lungs

Alveoli are thin-walled air sacs surrounded by a network of capillaries. They are the principal sites of exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between air and blood.

Mechanism of Breathing
Inhalation
During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, while the thoracic cavity expands. This reduces the pressure inside the lungs and allows air to enter.
Exhalation
During normal exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward. The volume of the thoracic cavity decreases, helping air move out of the lungs.

Definition
The nervous system is the body's major system for rapid control, coordination, communication and response to stimuli.

For example, withdrawing the hand quickly after touching a hot object is a reflex response.
